Endoscopy and Biopsy
• Biopsy, either by fine needle aspiration (FNA) or with a regular needle, is almost always necessary. This
procedure can be done through the skin without significant danger. Because of the variation in the tumor cells
of different types of cancer, the biopsy sample can be used to distinguish between a primary liver cancer or a
cancer that has spread from another organ. Occasionally, if the AFP is extremely high and the tumor very large,
a biopsy may not be necessary.
